‘A Guide To Modern Living’ was inspired by the brochures used by developers to market their new estates. Slick adverts capture show-homes with immaculate interiors and perfectly manicured exteriors, with adjective-garnished descriptions describing in detail how their homes in particular with meet a buyer’s needs in the best way.
Making these photographs helped me to understand and further explore the faceless nature of the estate I live on, part of the 200,000 homes which are built each year; homes which are marketed as being in the stunning countryside, but which are built upon that very same, rapidly depleting, countryside.
Made during the lockdowns of 2020, I was able to emphasise the eerie emptiness which I usually see here. Homes for thousands, with a tangible, yet invisible, community.
